Professional Aviation Safety Day 2025

Every year, Professional Aviation hosts Safety Day to strengthen a shared culture of safety and responsibility. At this year’s event, held in Ozzano dell’Emilia, students, pilots, instructors, and experts came together to learn from real cases and expert insights. The focus? Safety as a mindset – not just a checklist.

Opening Speech by Capt. Vito Preti

Captain Vito Preti

CEO and Founder, Professional Aviation
Real safety begins with preparation, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

Captain Vito Preti opened the event by addressing a recent accident involving one of the school’s aircraft. Thanks to excellent maintenance and the student’s calm reaction, the situation ended safely.

This real-life example reminded everyone that safety is not automatic—it’s built on training, readiness, and teamwork. He emphasized that in aviation, safety is the foundation for everything: operations, decision-making, and culture.

Understanding Space Disorientation

Lt. Col. Paola Verde, Aerospace Medicine Specialist

Lt. Col. Paola VerdeAerospace Medicine Specialist – Military Aviation

Exploring how the brain interprets space in flight and what affects it—beyond the cockpit.

Lt. Col. Verde delivered a thought-provoking talk on space disorientation in flight. She explained how orientation is influenced by multiple factors such as gender, cognitive styles, hormonal cycles, and training.

Her key message was clear: performance in flight depends on preparation and strategy, not on stereotypes.

Why UPRT Training Matters

Col. Alessandro Tortorella, ENAC Inspector

UPRT is not just regulation—it’s a mindset shift that prepares pilots for the unexpected.

Col. Tortorella shared the regulator’s perspective on Advanced UPRT (Upset Prevention and Recovery Training). Backed by EU regulations, this training teaches pilots to recognize and recover from in-flight upsets.

According to him, side-by-side aerobatic training is one of the most effective ways to prepare for unexpected situations.

Lt. Col. Giulio RosatiInvestigator, National Flight Safety Agency
Real accidents, real lessons – what human error teaches us about preparation and discipline.

Lt. Col. Rosati presented two case studies involving pilot error. In both situations, poor planning and disregard for procedures led to preventable accidents.

These examples highlighted the importance of sound judgment, strong airmanship, and following the rules – especially under pressure.

The Role of Safety Management Systems

Lt. Col. Daniele Piperno, from the Flight Safety Inspectorate – Military Aviation

The FSMS is a proactive, structured approach to managing risk at every level.

Lt. Col. Piperno introduced the new Flight Safety Management System (FSMS) used by the Italian Air Force.

Based on ICAO and NATO standards, FSMS provides a structured and proactive approach to aviation safety. It supports continuous improvement and ensures that risks are identified, managed, and monitored at every level.
